GRIP was founded in 2000 to provide support and assistance to survivors of sexual violence and raise awareness of sexual offences within the greater Nelspruit area.

GRIP has established a number of 24-hour care rooms in local hospitals, police stations and courts in Mpumalanga which offer immediate assistance to survivors. These are listed below.
- Community care workers support rape survivors to adhere to post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent HIV infection. Counsellors based at court prepare survivors and other witnesses to testify in court.
- Post court counseling is also provided.
- Support groups for parents of children who are raped or sexually assaulted are also available.
- GRIP manages short term accommodation facilities for victims of gender-based violence at police stations. The organization also runs Ekhaya Shelter which accommodates survivors of domestic violence up to six months.
GRIP also runs a number of programmes focused on HIV and AIDS and also provides testing and counselling via its mobile clinic. Additionally, the organization provides workshops for men around HIV and AIDS and gender-based violence
