16 Days Of Discontent: Day 8 – The Department of Basic Education and the South African Council of Educators

‘Sexually Transmitted Marks’

Picture of a pregnant schoolgirlToday’s focus is the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the South African Council of Educators (SACE). The DBE and the SACE are responsible for taking disciplinary action against educators who sexually abuse the learners in their care. When these two bodies fail to act promptly and effectively this disrupts girls’ education if they are forced to change schools, or drop out of school, while the abusive and exploitative conduct of educators is left unchecked. In fact, this behavior by educators now has its own term: ‘sexually transmitted marks.’

For their approach to disciplinary action around educators who sexually abuse female learners the DBE and SACE score: 4/10
